Neuropathic pain, also known as nerve pain, is a type of pain caused by nerve trauma. It is described as shooting or burning pain, and it can be accompanied by tingling and numbness. Peripheral neuropathy is a type of neuropathic pain that usually starts in the fingers and toes, and spreads upwards into the arms and legs.
Neuropathic pain can have various causes, such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain), fibromyalgia, shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia), phantom limb pain resulting from an amputation, multiple sclerosis, excessive alcohol intake, cancer and spine injuries. This type of pain is believed to occur when the nerves are damaged and are therefore unable to recognize and interpret the transmission of pain signals. This can result in the brain registering pain signals long after the initial cause of the pain has healed.
Neuropathic pain can be treated through medication, lifestyle treatments, nerve blocks and more recently, Ketamine infusions. Our clinic is pleased to offer nerve block injections and ketamine infusions as treatments for neuropathic pain that has not responded well to other types of treatment options.
